Project Overview

Ventilation performance for a high-heat generator plant room

The project involved a plant room containing three large diesel generator sets, each rated at approximately 1,250 kVA.

Fresh air was introduced through acoustic intake louvres, while heated air from the generators was discharged through opposing exhaust openings.

The main objective was to verify that the proposed ventilation arrangement could provide effective airflow through the plant room while keeping temperatures around the equipment within the required operating range.

Engineering Approach

Evaluating airflow and thermal performance with CFD

CFD was used to assess how fresh air entered the plant room, moved around the generator equipment, and carried rejected heat toward the exhaust side.

The simulation also provided insight into internal pressure patterns and temperature distribution throughout the space.

Airflow Distribution

Fresh-air movement through the intake openings and around the generator sets was assessed to identify the primary ventilation paths.

Heat Removal

Temperature distribution was evaluated to determine whether generator heat could be effectively transported toward the exhaust side.

Operating Conditions

Local temperatures around the generator equipment were checked against the specified maximum operating temperature.

CFD Results

Effective ventilation around the generator equipment

The CFD results showed that fresh air was effectively drawn into the plant room and distributed around the generator sets.

Temperatures around the generators remained below the specified 50°C operating limit in the simulated condition.

The analysis also identified warmer air accumulating in the upper region of the room, highlighting the expected effect of thermal stratification near the ceiling.

Project Outcome

CFD-supported verification of the ventilation concept

The analysis demonstrated that the proposed ventilation arrangement could provide effective fresh-air movement through the generator plant room and support removal of the generated heat.

CFD also highlighted the vertical temperature distribution within the room, including warmer conditions near the ceiling, providing useful information for evaluating the overall ventilation strategy.

The study provided a clear visual and quantitative basis for assessing the plant-room ventilation concept before final design implementation.
